Happy Birthday to the Duke!

The Original Big Kahuna!

Duke Paoa Kahinu Mokoe Hulikohola Kahanamoku (August 24, 1890 – January 22, 1968) was a Hawaiian swimmer, actor, lawman, early beach volleyball player and businessman credited with spreading the sport of surfing. Kahanamoku was a five-time Olympic medalist in swimming.

“The Duke” or “Big Kahuna” became America's shining star when he took home Olympic medals in 1912, but he didn’t stop there. He also brought home medals from the 1920 Olympics in Antwerp.  Of course this all happened long before Hawaii became America's 50th state, just three days before Duke turned 69 on August 21, 1959

The Duke was an iconic Hawaiian and had a born love for the ocean. That's why he is one of the Icons that we look up to!

Also born on this day... My Son! He is the next big Kahuna, I’m just sure of it!

Beer-Rum Punch

I wasn't going to do a #RumDay post this year, but I was amazed at the number of people on the Twitter that were asking for Rum Punch recipes! Crap, they are everywhere! You don’t hardly even have to look and you’ll find one. But for a “GOOD” recipe, you’ll have to do some mixing and see what you like!

I can think of several rum punch drinks that really stick out in my head. Perhaps the best I’ve ever had was at the Sunset Jamaica Grand hotel in Ocho Rios Jamaica. That was a trip that we booked using the good folks at We didn't care for the area, but the Rum Punch was amazing and the resort was BEAUTIFUL!

Running a close second would be the arrival drink at Bolongo Bay in St. Thomas, where I am always willing to hang my #Castaway hat and call home for a weekend!

The third best EVER... Beach Bar at Cruz Bay on St. John. An eclectic little kick ass joint that is right on the beach, serving up good times, good food, good music and rum by the barrel! If you go to St. John and miss the Beach Bar.... You need to work on your travel and exploration skills!

But I must admit that as a Beer Guy, I get a bit distressed without some sort of malt and hops. So I devised my own version a few years ago that I think you should at least try.

It goes something like this:
2 parts guava nectar
2 parts pineapple juice
1 part OJ
Enough grenadine to turn it all red.

I mix this up at least 4 hours in advance to let the flavors mingle a bit! Rum Punch is a social drink, so there is no reason to keep the flavors from having some fun too!

In a pint glass packed with ice, add 1/2 oz (more or less) Wray and Nephew white overproof and 2 oz (more or less) Cruzan Aged Dark rum and 3 oz Carib Lager. (any light lager will work) Then top with the fruit juice mix and stir gently.

The thing to remember when making Rum Punch is that you cannot use cheap rum. Never use a rum that isn’t good enough to drink on the rocks. You just won’t be happy with the end result. Cruzan Aged Dark is my “Go To” rum. I always keep it on hand and it works for damn near anything without breaking the budget!

Papadeaux (Part 2)

The main Course!

As you saw from our post on Saturday, the drinks and appetizers at Papadeaux left me less than impressed, with the only real highlight being the fried calamari.

Now we should move along to the main course.

We don’t eat at Papadeaux very often, as it’s a fairly expensive proposition. Especially when we take our two kids. The menu is expansive to say the least, so if you are like us, you will want to take a few minutes and really consider your choices.

There is plenty of fried seafood, steaks, pasta and then you get to my favorite... The grilled seafood.

I have somewhat of a philosophy about food. It shouldn’t be covered with flavoring.

Take Catfish for example. It’s nasty! If you cover it in spicy enough breading, it’s pretty good. But for my money, if it comes out of the ocean, I want to taste the food... Not the bread! So I gravitate to non-breaded seafood selections.

Papadeaux (Part 1)

Ready for some change!

I think you all know that here at BKB, we are pretty diverse food aficionados. We can be equally as happy with a $2 Taco as a $50 Sea Bass.  We dig fried Cheese Curds at the pub as much as a Tiger Roll at a 5 star Sushi bar.

I don’t care if my meal costs $5 or $500 if it’s not good, it’s making my eye twitch!

One of our favorite restaurants in Colorado, the Papadeaux Seafood Kitchen in Greenwood Village (7520 E. Progress Place) has everything you’d want. Drinks, great seafood, atmosphere out the kazoo and plenty of parking (as long as it’s not the busy hours).

What struck me on our last visit, was the lack of consistency and serious disappointment in their drink menu.

I suppose I should start by saying that I was initially put off by our server who attacked us wanting to take a drink order before I even realized that we had a drink menu on the table. I panicked and ordered a N’awlins Punch, and the wife ordered a drink called a “Swamp Thing.”

Pretty catchy names, and sticking with the “French Quarter” theme, I can dig it. Till they showed up on the table.

My punch was a watermelon flavored mix of vodka, citrus vodka, watermelon, lemon and salt! Its so lumpy with chunks of melon that drinking it through the straw was impossible. There was no balance at all. I would call it cloyingly sweet!

Kahuna’s Chick liked her “Swamp Thing,” but to me, it tasted like something I would have made in High School, when trying to figure out how to mix a drink. The mix of Raspberry and Melon liqueurs mixed with “Slushy Machine” margarita and hurricane. It looks good, but the combination of sweet, salty, melon and lime mixed with the texture issues of syrupy liqueurs mixed with icy frozen drink mix makes for a unique experience... that is not necessarily a positive one.
Hoping for a better option, I hoped for a nice craft beer. No such luck. In fact, the menu lists Dos Equis as “Craft Beer” instead of “Import.” They seem a bit confused!

I tried a “Captains Hurricane.”
