Breakfast at Harriette's

The secret is out! I love to eat! I love everything about food! I love to cook it, I love the smell of it, I love the sights and sounds of  a bustling restaurant and I LOVE TO EAT IT!

I told you last week that we wished that we could have had our friends and family with us at every meal while we were in the keys. Harriette’s Restaurant at 95710 Overseas Hwy. Key Largo was no exception.

We stumbled on Harriette’s by chance. We went driving in search of Breakfast and something new to see. After 15 minutes of driving, the kids were getting hungry and I was starving. When Kahuna’s Chick saw the quaint teal and yellow diner on the other side of the road and said, “That place looks popular,” I nearly jumped the car through the ditch Dukes of Hazard style.

The Last Meal!

Have you ever had a weekend where you wished that all of your friends were at every meal because it is so good?

We had exactly that kind of weekend when we went to Islamorada to kick off  2014!

From Biscuits and Gravy and Conch Burger for breakfast to Conch Salad for lunch to Cracked Conch and Conch fritters for dinner.... I simply love all that comes from the sea, especially Conch!

With Islamorada being nationally known as the sport fishing capital of the world, I’m not surprised that there is an abundance of good seafood available.

But the meal I want to share with you first, was our last meal on our way to Miami to fly home.

When I was 15, my mom and I did the ultimate trip from Miami to Key West and back. I think we stopped at every shell shop and SCUBA store along the way.

Many memories were made that week, but two stick out in my mind. First, we watched the movie Wayne's World at the theater on Tavernier Key, and we ate at a place called the “Fish House” on Key Largo.

So, when I saw that humble little restaurant, I knew right away that I was going to ensure that my wife and kids got to experience some of the best seafood in Florida!

To tell you how great the place is, we waited 25 minutes for a table at 3 in the afternoon. Just too many people looking for great food for the number of tables in the restaurant.

We ordered appetizers of Cracked Conch and Calamari, both were the best of the weekend. And, given the great food we had consumed, that’s saying something!

Jessica and the kids ordered up assorted platters of fried seafood, including conch fritters, clam strips, fried oysters and fried snapper.

I normally don’t dig that much fried food. I prefer my seafood grilled, broiled or raw, but I must admit that I was fully impressed with this pile of fried sea succulence!

I ordered a lobster ruben on marbled rye. Honestly, I think it was 95% as good as the grouper ruben at Frenchy’s in Clearwater... And that’s my all-time favorite sandwich available on this planet!
Unfortunately, we didn’t have room for a plate or two of Key Lime Pie, but I hear it is worth saving room!

So if you find yourself anywhere near Key Largo, make sure and stop into the Fish House! It’s 100% Kahuna Approved!

2014: Palm trees and a stiff breeze!

Starting off 2014 with palm trees and a stiff breeze!

I must admit that 2014 is off to a nice start!

The year started with our son stumbling out of his room with 12 seconds left on the ball drop! He made it to the living room just in time to share a nice hug with me and Kahuna’s chick! Then the all-important kiss! It’s kinda like a tradition between me and Kahuna’s Chick!

Safe and easy beach access for kids of all ages!
Even my first beer of the new year was excellent! I had just poured a Mephistopheles stout that has been sitting in the cellar since 2009! Hard to beat starting a new year with an old beer!

Add a quick 4 hour flight, 2 hours of driving and we found ourselves transported to an island style paradise known as Islamorada!

If you are not familiar with the florida keys, it’s a chain of extra small islands between Key Largo
