Talk about Beer!

We need to talk about how we talk about beer!

One of the best parts about craft beer is the fact that you have something to talk about when you meet another craft beer enthusiast.  Even if you have absolutely nothing else in common, you can always enjoy chatting about beer.

Pretty good beer! Worth talking about!
I love to talk beer with people... Most of the time. Sometimes, I’m just not into it, and that is what leads me to our topic for today.

A few weeks ago, I was accosted by a beer nerd. The guy was obviously very excited to get to tell someone about how he has this, that and something else. How he has tried Utopias three years in a row... but really doesn’t like it... and on and on and on and on......

Normally, I’m up for this kind of banter, but I was preoccupied and dead tired. That opened my eyes as to how I’m sure I sound on most days.

For some reason people always like to challenge me. Ever since I was a kid, I was always the biggest kid in the room. Often times, that meant the little cowboy in the corner with a chip on his shoulder the size of Texas and trying to prove to the world how tough he is, would pick me to try and start a fight with.

The same damn thing happens today, when people find out I write a beer based blog.

I’m not a beer blogger! I’m not an expert on any beer styles or pairings. I’ve drank a lot of beer, and I’ve made a lot of beer, and I sure like beer! But I’m not into getting into a pissing match with someone trying to prove their knowledge. Little do they know, I'm about the least competitive human you will ever meet!

I do get a kick out of the reaction I get when I tell people about my vertical stash. Yeah... I’ve got Celebration Ale back to 2008! YES, I DO know that American IPA style beers do not get “Better” with age, but it’s all about the education!  Same issue with my Spaten Oktoberfest vertical that goes back to 2009. It’s not about making better beer! It is about what I can learn!

Many of the certified beer nerds will go ape shit and tell me what a waste of time it is to age an IPA!
“IT HAS TO BE FRESH!” They often say in a nearly militant voice! Obviously not realizing that the first time Pliny hit a competition it was anything but FRESH!

I don’t care! I just want to like some beer!

One is NOT like the others!
I love to see the look on the faces of people who claim to have this vertical, a bottle of that beer or keg of something rare when they realize I’m not a bar manager. It is all just shit stashed in my basement. In a semi-temperature controlled room.... With labels, tasting notes and tags about when and where I acquired it.

Yeah, I’m a beer nerd. I ABSOLUTELY want to share the art and science of craft beer with everyone I meet! But please slap the shit out of me if I start to sound like I’m bragging or comparing! I’d love to hear what you have in your cellar, but it certainly doesn’t make or break any additions to mine. We are all just beer guys and gals... No need to get into a pissing match about it! Do whatever you can to help others and be passionate, just be careful! Your words may come off as a lecture, and that turns people off FAST!

Have a great weekend friends! Make some memories, help someone out and drink well!
